Super Punch-Out!!
A fast-paced boxing game where you fight from a behind-the-back perspective to become the World Video Boxing Association champion. Success requires quick reflexes, pattern recognition, and perfect timing to counter colorful, outlandish opponents. While technically a boxing game, it's more of an arcade beat 'em up than a realistic boxing simulation.

About This Game
Super Punch-Out!! was developed by Nintendo R&D3 and released for the Super Nintendo in 1994, following the massive success of its NES predecessor Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!. Unlike the original, this sequel was primarily an arcade port—based on the 1984 Super Punch-Out!! cabinet—and shifted to a transparent wireframe view of the player's boxer rather than the small sprite used on the NES. The result was a faster, more reflex-driven game with less emphasis on narrative.
Despite its mechanical brilliance, Super Punch-Out!! never achieved the same cultural footprint as the NES original. It received no celebrity endorsement, no memorable trainer character like Doc Louis, and arrived late in the SNES lifecycle when attention was shifting to the next generation. Among speedrunners and fighting game enthusiasts, however, it's often considered the tighter and more replayable entry in the series. The game remained a Japan and North America exclusive until its eventual worldwide re-release through Nintendo Switch Online decades later.
Did You Know?
- A hidden two-player mode went undiscovered for over 28 years. In 2022, players found that highlighting "New Game" and pressing X+A unlocks a versus mode — no hacking required. It works on every version of the game.
- Charles Martinet — the iconic voice of Mario — provided all of the voice clips used in the game. This was one of his earliest Nintendo roles, predating his most famous work.
- Mr. Sandman is hard-coded to never lose by KO. He will always get back up after his second knockdown no matter what. Even modifying the game's code with cheat devices can't change this — he can only be beaten by decision.
- The game has one of the most aggressive anti-piracy systems on the SNES. If it detects a bootleg cartridge, it displays increasingly stern warning messages on each boot before locking up entirely.

Soundtrack
Composed by Takashi Kumegawa & Masaru Sakakibara
The soundtrack matches the intensity of the ring — punchy percussion, escalating brass, and each opponent's theme telegraphing their personality before a single punch is thrown. The Special Circuit themes in particular are standouts.
